The meeting was started with the prayer offered by  Renukaadevi. Dr Ramani A  Aiyer, was a Guest Speaker and Dr Shakuntala Gheewala Chaired the meeting.
                                                    M  L Swamy gave the report regarding the activities of various units of FOSWL a India.  V S Sharma introduced the Guest Speaker wherein he mentioned the achievements of Dr A Aiyer who is Phd in Biochemistry from Harvard University and MBA from UC Berkeley. He is at present CEO of  Shashta Bio Venture, San Jose, CA.
                                                     Dr Shakuntala Gheewala in her opening remarks gave her experiences as a Doctor regarding  Cancer.  She added that now cancer treatment has made lot of progress.
                                                      Dr Aiyer spoke on' The Modern Novel Cancer Therapies' wherein he  explained the different types of cancers related to  Lung, Breast,Colon, Bladder, Prostate, Liver, Stomach and Blood etc. There are two types of cancer one is local and other is malignant. The malignant cancer can spread anywhere in the body. The cancer start with degeneration of some of cells. Cancer also depends  up to some extent on genetic linkage.  In America prostate cancers are about 29% while breast cancers are about 14%.  However  prostate cancer has  higher survival rate and patient can survives up to 15 years.
                                                       The cancer takes place due to degeneration of cell but in case of Lung Cancer it is mainly due to smoking and chewing of tobacco. In case of other cancers like Lung, Liver, stomach,  person survive about five years. However he added that in India rate of Lung Cancer is on higher side due to habit of smoking and taking tobacco by mouth.  Even high pollution also one of the reasons for disease like Cancer. He said that in India about 2 Million persons are suffering from cancer while in USA  it may be 24 Millions.
                                                       However modern therapies like radiation, surgery have improved the Survival Rates, but it has its side effects. The  FDA has now approved ‘2000 Gleevec” drug for Cancer. Besides that the targeted therapy is  to cancel bad cells not to harm the good cells.  The Anti tumor gun is also  used in order to remove Tumor.  The Stem Cell research is also after curing the Cancer but still more has to be done to control and cure it.
